I certainly was not shocked to read that rice is a staple in the Bangladeshi diet. I've eaten more rice in the past month than I have the entire year. Tough times for this potato-loving girl. But, when in Bangladesh...
I was a little selfish and searched out a fish recipe, because that's just what I was in the mood for tonight. What I found was a dish called "Makher Taukari", and it proved to be an excellent choice.
It must have been a tough weekend for fisherman with the remnants of Ida pushing through New England, because no one had fresh fish. After hitting up every market and even the fish monger in Southie, I put Ted on the assignment. He came home with some very nice looking haddock. Not my top choice, but at least it was fresh!
This recipe was simple and took less than thirty minutes to prepare. I sauteed onions and garlic in olive oil, then added chili powder, turmeric, and salt and let the spices fry. I seared the haddock in the pan on both sides, and then filled the pot with water just high enough to cover the filets. I added a chopped hot pepper and half a tomato and put the lid on the pan. Everything simmered for about ten minutes before I tested the haddock and found it to be cooked through. The fish was light and moist, with a perfect hint of spice. And of course, I served it with a side of rice...
Our meal from Bangladesh scored a 3.25.
