(Get Me) Out of Africa

Bon Appétit declared meatballs the "Dish of the Year" in their January 2010 issue.

"I'm so culinarily forward-thinking!" I thought as I flipped through the issue. "Meatballs have appeared three times already on my blog!"

Armed with this new information I gleaned from one of my favorite cooking magazines, and still high from my success with Lamb Meatballs from Burkina Faso, I chose to put meatballs on the menu once again.

The Central African Republic did not have much to offer as far as appetizing recipes. The staple of their diet is cassava and cassava leaves. Peanut butter also seems to be a popular food. I found a meatball recipe that included onions, chili peppers and ground beef cooked in a peanut butter and okra sauce. It sounded a little strange, but strangely good. I was convinced they could be my best meatball yet!

I'm not sure if it was chef's execution, a poorly written recipe, or simply that this food really stinks - but Kanda ti Nyma, as the meatball dish is known, was one of the worst menus I've prepared to date. I'd put it right up there with Pepper Pot Soup, considering that I took two bites before moving on to dessert. The meatballs themselves were surprisingly dry, considering they cooked in sauce. The sauce had seperated and tasted greasy and slimy. The slime I attribute to the okra, which I've come to realize I just don't care for.

Ted insisted that they weren't too bad, and he finished my plate. But our combined score leaves the Central African Republic very close to the bottom of our list - 1.75.

We ate tacos tonight to make up for the meatball disaster! There's nothing taco night can't fix.
