An Even Better Meatball!

... and this one didn't even come from Eastern Europe.

Burkina Faso is a small landlocked country in West Africa, and is one of the poorest countries in the world. Despite this, our dinner from Burkina Faso was the best meal of the week!

I made Spiced Lamb Balls by sauteing onion in olive oil with cinnamon, ginger, coriander, and crushed red pepper. The softened, spiced onions were then mixed with ground lamb, eggs, and breadcrumbs. I formed the mixture into balls and let them cool in the refrigerator for an hour. The recipe called for frying the balls, but I decided to bake them at 400 degrees for thirty minutes.

While the meatballs baked, I made a popular African hot sauce known as Pili-Pili to accompany the lamb. I placed red hot chili peppers, lemon juice, garlic, and oil in a food processor. I then cooked the pureed mixture in a fry pan briefly, and let cool to room temperature to serve.

I served the meatballs over white rice with the hot sauce drizzled on top. They were moist and well seasoned, and the hot sauce added a very special kick. I ate leftover lamb balls all week for lunch by slicing them and putting them on a sandwich. Delicious!

Burkina Faso scores a 3.25.
